Couples counselling offers a space to have difficult conversations about life-changing events that affect our relationships such as starting a family, redundancy, ill health, children leaving home, bereavement, or an affair within the safety of a calm supportive environment.
I hold an Advanced Diploma in Couples Counselling approved by the National Council of Psychotherapists (NCIP) I work with couples to explore healthier, more effective ways of communicating with each other.
It’s very common for one partner to take the first step in seeking therapy. If that’s you—well done. This doesn’t mean your partner isn’t invested; often, they just need a little encouragement to get started.
The anticipation of beginning couples counselling can feel daunting, try taking a few moments to reflect on the current challenges and what you want the relationship to look like in the future.
What to expect
Couples counselling can be different from individual therapy. It is usually more structured, often over a set period of around 10 to 12 sessions with a focus on agreed goals. My role is not to take sides or assign blame, but to help you both move forward together.
There are some important boundaries to note Couples Counselling cannot proceed if there is an ongoing affair—this must come to an end before we begin. Likewise, if there are issues such as domestic violence or substance abuse, I recommend individual therapy instead, as couples work would not be appropriate in those circumstances.
Sessions are 50 minutes and cost £120. They can take place online, in person, or a combination of the two.
